The Eagles' magic number is currently 14
We're down to the last 14 regular-season games and if you're keeping an eye on the standings on the AHL's Playoff Primer then you already know that the Eagles magic number is now 14. There are a few win/loss variables involved but that means that only 14 points is needed to punch a ticket to the playoffs. See below for how the points add up.
Points Explained - in layman's terms
How we can get points:
- We get 2 points for every win in regulation or win in overtime
- We get 1 point for every overtime loss or shootout loss
How it gets complicated:
With a Bakersfield loss in regulation we would gain 2 points. With a Bakersfield OT/Shootout loss or OT/Shootout win, we would gain 1 point.
Why Bakersfield matters - they're in 9th place after all aren't they? Bakersfield currently:
- A) sits outside the playoff picture in the Pacific Division (or between 8th -10th places, the top 7 teams in the Pacific Division will get a bid to post-season play),
- and B) has the most "maximum points" still available of any team outside of the 1-7 placed teams
Note: Bakersfield plays on Tuesday, March 18th, and Wednesday, March, 19th against us, and the results from these games could greatly affect our magic number.
What is the magic #?
Magic # is the number of points needed by a team to clinch a playoff berth. A team's magic # is reduced when it earns standings points, or when the team with the highest possible total outside the playoff picture fails to earn standings points. A team clinches a playoff berth when its magic # reaches zero.
