Players Donate “Fine Fund” Money to Northern Colorado Community Foundations

May 22, 2019

The Colorado Eagles have always strived to make a positive impact on the Northern Colorado community no matter what league they played in. This inaugural season in the American Hockey League was no different. Eagles players and hockey operations staff participated in over 100 different community events throughout the 2018-19 season. From playing ball hockey at Larimer County Boys & Girls Clubs to Trick-Or-Treating with a young cancer patient, the commitment to the community ran deep within the Eagles locker room this season.

This season the Eagles players created a “Fine Fund”. This fund would fill up every time a player committed an infraction. These infractions ranged from bad penalties during a game, not cleaning up properly in the team kitchen, being late to a meal or flight or bus ride. At the end of the year, the captains then decide what should be done with the money. Often this money is used towards a team dinner or fun team event to signify the end of the season. This year, however, the team captains made the unanimous decision that the fund should go back to the community. “This community supported us players all year long, even though most of us were new faces,” said Eagles defenseman, David Warsofsky. “This money belongs to them.”

The UCHealth Northern Colorado Foundation Patients and Family Assistance and the Northern Colorado First Responders were chosen by the players as two foundations that would use the money to directly help the Northern Colorado community. Warsofsky, one of the Eagles alternate captains, went out this morning to meet with the foundations to hand over the checks. “We worked with both organizations throughout the year with the First Responders Night, Eagles Fights Cancer and other events so it was an easy decision for us to make. We’re just happy to be able to give back to this amazing community that does so much for us.”
