Greenway’s Hat Trick Paces Iowa in 6-1 Win over Eagles
Oct 27, 2018
DES MOINES, IA. – Iowa Wild forward Jordan Greenway registered a hat trick, while the Wild scored three goals in the second period to propel Iowa to a 6-1 victory over the Colorado Eagles on Saturday. The Wild scored a pair of goals on the power play, while holding the Eagles 0-for-5 on the man-advantage in the contest.
For a second-consecutive game the Wild would strike early, as Greenway snapped a shot from the bottom of the left circle that would light the lamp and put Iowa on top, 1-0 just 1:25 into the contest.
Colorado would knot the game at 1-1 when forward Sheldon Dries snagged a drop pass at the top of the circle before slicing through the slot and beating Wild goaltender Andrew Hammond at the 7:45 mark of the first period.
Iowa would earn its first power play of the game in the waning minutes of the opening frame and they would take advantage, as Greenway unfurled a wrister from the right circle that would beat Eagles goalie Pavel Francouz and give the Wild the 2-1 edge with 4:10 left to play in the period.
The second period would see Iowa bury another goal early in a period, as defenseman Louie Belpedio would skate through the left-wing circle before snapping a shot into the back of the net to give the Wild the 3-1 lead just 1:28 into the middle frame.
Boasting the AHL’s top power-play unit, Iowa would again flex its muscle on the man-advantage when forward Cal O’Reilly stepped into a shot from the left wing that would beat Francouz and extend the Wild’s advantage to 4-1 at the 5:22 mark of the second period.
Less than three minutes later, Greenway would complete his hat trick when he snagged a cross-slot pass at the side of the net and directed the puck into the cage to give Iowa a 5-1 lead with 11:29 left to play in the second period. The goal would also signify the end of the night for Francouz, who would give way in net to Spencer Martin for the duration.
The Wild would round out their scoring in the third period when forward Justin Kloos finished off a give-and-go in transition with a shot from the slot that would beat Martin and stretch Iowa’s advantage to 6-1 at the 8:15 mark of the final frame. The Eagles would come no closer, as the Wild would skate to their fifth-straight home win.
Francouz suffered his first loss of the season, allowing five goals on 18 shots, while Martin stopped nine of the 10 shots he faced in the contest. Hammond collected the win, making 25 saves on 26 shots.
