Eagles Prospect Watch
Jun 27, 2018
A new class of players will descend on Northern Colorado this weekend.
The Colorado Avalanche Development Camp marks the first major event of the 2018-19 season for the Eagles and their new place as the 31st American Hockey League team. Camp starts in Denver at the Family Sports Ice Arena, the Colorado Avalanche’s practice rink, and concludes with a 3-on-3 Tournament in Fort Collins at EPIC on Sunday, July 1st. The tournament will showcase the full 29-player development camp roster, highlighting nine players that could possibly be on the Eagles’ roster this fall.
Which players are eligible?
Major Junior players under 20 whose NHL rights-holder deems not ready for the NHL are required to return to their Major Junior team. However, this rule does not apply to European professional leagues or NCAA.
Martin Kaut, the Colorado Avalanche’s 1st round pick, highlights this rookie camp for Eagles fans as he could land in Northern Colorado to start the year if he does not crack the NHL roster at the beginning. Following him are two defensive powerhouses in Conor Timmins and Josh Anderson. Timmins is coming off a 41-point season in the OHL with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and is poised to make the jump to the professional level this year. Anderson is coming off a championship season much like the Eagles. He helped the Swift Current Broncos to their first WHL Championship in 25 years.
Five forwards coming into camp will have a chance to make the Eagles roster including familiar face Travis Barron. Barron helped the Eagles capture the Kelly Cup recently with the game tying goal in Game 7. Ty Lewis of the Brandon Wheat Kings is coming an explosive 100-point season, 44 goals and 56 assists, and looks to keep the same pace in his first professional season. The last two forwards eligible at Development Camp are Josh Dickinson and Igor Shvyrev. Shvyrev split time last season with the Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL, tallying 1 goal in 32 games, and StaInye Lisy Magnitogorsk of the MHL, tallying 17 points in10 games. Dickinson played last season with Clarkson University, picking up 15 goals and 11 assists in 40 games before ending the season in the AHL with San Antonio playing 5 games.
At the beginning of May the Avalanche signed KHL standout Pavel Francouz to a one-year deal, although a 1990 birth year, Francouz will be at Development Camp this week. As of recent Francouz played the last three seasons in the KHL, maintaining nothing less than a .924 save percentage in each season. Francouz is coming off a season where he saw 35 KHL games, the most of his career, and ended the regular season with a 1.80 GAA and .946 SV%. He appeared in 12 playoff games last season, finishing with a 1.90 GAA and .949 SV%. Last but not least is Adam Werner, a 5th round Avalanche pick in 2016. Adam played for Bjorkloven in Sweden last season, ending the year with a 2.34 GAA and .915 SV%. He then spent the remainder of his season in the AHL with San Antonio, playing in 3 games going 2-1-0.
A wealth of prospects to be excited about for Eagles fans to keep an eye on during Development and leading into Rookie and Main Camp in the fall. All of this excitement will kick off in Northern Colorado on Sunday July 1st at EPIC in Fort Collins. The 3-on-3 tournament is scheduled to start at 5:30pm MST with media availability following.
