TUCSON, AZ. – Colorado goaltender Spencer Martin stopped 31 of the 32 shots he faced, as the Eagles defeated the Tucson Roadrunners, 3-1 on Friday. J.C. Beaudin, Mark Alt and Martin Kaut all netted goals in the winning effort. Specialty teams proved strong for Colorado, with the Eagles going 1-for-2 on the power play and a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
Some early transition led to the game’s first goal, as a shot from the left-wing circle would be deflected past Tucson goalie Adin Hill by Beaudin. The goal gave Colorado a 1-0 edge at the 9:17 mark of the first period and was Beaudin’s sixth tally of the season.
Trailing 1-0 after 20 minutes of play, the Roadrunners would knot the game late in the second period when defenseman Cam Dineen fired a wrister from the right wing that would deflect off forward Adam Helewka and into the back of the net. The goal would tie the contest at 1-1 with just 1:38 left to play in the middle frame.
Heading into the third period with the game still deadlocked at 1-1, Colorado would hop back on top on the power play when Alt collected a pass at the bottom of the left-wing circle and rifled a shot past Hill to give the Eagles a 2-1 edge just 1:15 into the final frame.
Colorado would thwart three Tucson power plays in the final period of regulation, as the Roadrunners would be forced to pull Hill in the final 90 seconds of the contest in favor of the extra attacker. The move would set up Kaut to add some late insurance with an empty-net goal from his own blue line to secure the Eagles 3-1 victory.
Colorado concludes its season-long, six-game road trip with a game against the Tucson Roadrunners at Tucson Convention Center Arena on Saturday, February 2nd at 7:05pm MT.
