Early Deficit Haunts Eagles For Second Straight Game

Eagles Come Up Short in 2-1 Loss to San Diego

Feb 12, 2019

LOVELAND, CO. – San Diego built a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes of action and held on for a 2-1 victory over the Colorado Eagles on Tuesday. Mason Geertsen scored the Eagles lone goal in the contest, as Pavel Francouz made 34 saves on 36 shots in the losing effort.

San Diego would jump out to an early lead when a quick-developing 2-on-1 in the Colorado zone led to a goal from the slot for forward Chase De Leo to give the Gulls a 1-0 edge just 2:36 into the contest.

Later in the first period, San Diego would earn a 5-on-3 power play and forward Corey Tropp would take advantage with a shot from the bottom of the left-wing circle that would get past Francouz and stretch the Gulls advantage to 2-0 at the 12:03 mark of the opening frame.

Heading into the second period, Colorado would finally break through when Geertsen collected a cross-slot pass on the rush and ripped a wrister from the left circle into the back of the net to trim San Diego’s lead to 2-1 with 3:02 remaining in the period.

The third period would see the Eagles generate eight shots on net, but Gulls goaltender Jeff Glass would stop all eight of those chances to preserve the 2-1 victory for San Diego. Colorado finished the night going 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Gulls netted one goal on four chances on the man-advantage. The Eagles were outshot in the contest by a final count of 36-30.
