Colorado Wins Fourth Straight with 3-2 Shootout Victory over Iowa
Nov 30, 2018
LOVELAND, CO. – The Colorado Eagles picked up second-period goals from Travis Barron and A.J. Greer to erase a 1-0 deficit and help propel the Eagles to a 3-2 shootout victory over the Iowa Wild on Friday. The win was Colorado’s fourth-straight and now improves the Eagles home record to 7-2-2. Colorado goaltender Pavel Francouz collected his fourth-consecutive win in net to improve to 10-4-1-0 on the year.
Iowa jumped on the board early in the contest when defenseman Carson Soucy skated through the top of the left circle and snapped a wrister that would beat Francouz to give the Wild a 1-0 edge just 6:50 into the first period.
Colorado would ramp up the pressure in the second period, outshooting the Wild by a count of 17-7. It would also be a period that would see the Eagles tie the game at 1-1 when Barron raced through the right-wing circle before burying a wrist shot past Wild goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen with only 2:05 remaining in the middle frame.
Only 24 seconds later, Greer would hustle down the right-wing boards before muscling his way through the low-slot and firing a shot into the back of the net to give the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.
Heading into the final period of play, a turnover by Colorado behind the end line would put the puck into the crease where forward Colton Beck would slide it home and tie the game at 2-2 at the 6:34 mark of the final frame of regulation.
Iowa would earn three power plays in the third period, including a full minute of 5-on-3 action, but Francouz and the penalty kill would not surrender another goal and the two teams would head to sudden-death overtime.
Each club threw two shots on net in the extra session, but none of those chances would find the back of the net, sending the Eagles to a shootout for the second-straight contest.
During the shootout, Colorado would net goals from both Michael Joly and Martin Kaut, while Francouz would turn aside two of the Wild’s three shooters to secure the 3-2 victory for Colorado.
The Eagles were a perfect 6-for-6 on the penalty kill but were held 0-for-3 on the man-advantage. Francouz finished the night with 27 saves on 29 shots, while Kahkonen suffered the shootout loss, giving up two goals on 26 shots.
