Colorado Overpowers Gulls in 4-1 Victory

LOVELAND, CO. – Four different skaters found the back of the net for Colorado, as the Eagles defeated the San Diego Gulls, 4-1 on Saturday. Goaltender Justus Annunen earned his 20th win of the season in net, turning aside 27 of the 28 shots he faced. Dylan Sikura, Dalton Smith, Gabriel Fontaine and Jordan Gross all produced multi-point efforts for Colorado.
The Eagles would jump out early when defenseman Jacob MacDonald barreled his way to the bottom of the left-wing circle before sweeping a shot past Gulls goalie Lukas Dostal to give Colorado a 1-0 edge just 2:17 into the contest.
The lead would grow when Fontaine tracked down a bouncing puck in the low slot and fired it into the back of the net to push the Eagles' advantage to 2-0 with 1:29 remaining in the first period. Colorado would go on to outshoot San Diego, 11-10 in the opening 20 minutes and carried a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
The Eagles would utilize a power play midway through the second period to extend the lead even further, as forward Stefan Matteau deflected a shot from the point that, beating Dostal and making it 3-0 at the 12:34 mark of the middle frame.
Still on top, 3-0 as the puck dropped on the third period of play, Colorado would keep the foot on the gas as Sikura drove from the right-wing circle into the slot before snapping a wrister into the back of the net to push the Eagles lead to 4-0 at the 4:31 mark of the period.
The Gulls would finally get on the board via the power play, as forward Alex Limoges tipped a pass at the top of the crease past Annunen to cut Colorado’s advantage to 4-1 with 8:01 remaining in the contest.
The Eagles outshot San Diego 34-28 in the contest, as Colorado finished 1-for-3 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
