Winning Streak Reaches Seven Games, as Eagles Top Thunder 5-3

WICHITA, KS. – The Colorado Eagles scored a pair of power-play goals and cruised to a 5-3 victory over the Wichita Thunder on Wednesday, marking Colorado’s seventh consecutive win. Forward Alex Belzile notched a pair of goals, while fellow forward Matt Garbowsky registered three assists in the winning effort.

Colorado wasted little time jumping on the scoreboard, as defenseman Cody Corbett launched a shot from the top of the left circle on the power play that caught a piece of Thunder goalie Scott Greenham and carried into the back of the net. The goal was Corbett’s second of the season and gave the Eagles the 1-0 lead just 2:33 into the contest.

Less than five minutes later and with Colorado back on the man-advantage, forward Mitch Holmberg would creep into the slot and wire a shot past Greenham, extending the Eagles lead to 2-0 at the 7:24 mark of the first period.

The Thunder would strike back in the second period when defenseman Jamie Doornbosch fired a puck from the blue line on the power play, beating Eagles goalie Clarke Saunders and slicing the Colorado lead to 2-1 with 6:17 gone in the middle frame. Wichita would knot the game with another power-play goal, as forward Louick Marcotte wrapped on top of the crease and fed the puck into the back of the net to tie the contest at 2-2 with 7:27 remaining in the second period.

Colorado would respond with a quick answer when forward Kenny Brooks drove down the right wing boards and put the puck on net. Fellow forward Jackson Houck hustled behind Brooks and shoved the loose puck across the goal line and put Colorado back on top 3-2 at the 13:12 mark on the second period. Just over a minute later, a 3-on-2 rush for Colorado resulted in Garbowsky snapping a puck across the slot and onto the tape of Belzile, who would hammer it past Greenham to give Colorado the 4-2 advantage.

Wichita would again cut into the Eagles lead, when forward David Friedmann released from the penalty box, forced a turnover and raced down the ice on a breakaway, beating Saunders five-hole to cut the Colorado edge to 4-3 with 11:17 remaining in regulation.

The Thunder would pull Greenham in favor of the extra attacker, but the Eagles would be the team to take advantage, as Belzile snapped the puck into the vacant net from the red line to give Colorado the 5-3 lead with only 48 seconds left in the contest.

Clarke Saunders claimed his sixth consecutive win in goal, making 18 saves on 21 shots in the contest. The Eagles finished the night going 2-for-6 on the power play.

The Eagles continue their three-game set against the Wichita Thunder on Friday, February 10th at 6:00pm MT at Intrust Bank Arena in Wichita, KS.
