WINDSOR, Colo. – The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, have announced that they have signed defenseman Gage Ausmus for the 2017-18 season. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound blueliner recently concluded a four-year career at the University of North Dakota where he served as the team’s captain in both his junior and senior season, becoming just the fourth two-time captain in the last 25 years at UND. Ausmus generated 29 points in 143 NCAA contests, playing at a combined +35 while also helping lead UND to a National Championship in 2016.
“Gage is a young defenseman who brings a tremendous amount of leadership and experience for a 22 year-old rookie,” said Eagles head coach Aaron Schneekloth. “He’s a player who was a captain and a National Champion at UND, he’s played at the highest levels of amateur hockey and he has a winning pedigree that we’re excited to have here in Colorado.”
A 5th round pick of the San Jose Sharks in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft, Ausmus was a member of both the U.S. National Under-17 and Under-18 teams. The East Grand Forks, Minnesota native helped both squads capture Silver Medals, while also being named to the 2012 Under-17 WHC All-Star Team.
“I’m just really excited to be able to play in a place that is so nice and with an organization that I have heard so many great things about,” said Ausmus. “There have been and still are some really great UND ties there with Coach Schneekloth and the players. In fact, I talked with my coach at UND, Brad Berry and discussed where to go after college and he thought this would be a great place for me to start my pro career.”
