ECHL Defenseman of the Year Matt Register Back in Colorado

WINDSOR, Colo. – The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, have announced that they have re-signed defenseman Matt Register for the 2017-18 season. The 6-foot-2, 190-pound blueliner is coming off a season in which he captured ECHL Defenseman of the Year honors for the second time in his career. Register led all ECHL defensemen last season with 64 points in 72 regular season games, earning him a spot on the All-ECHL First Team.  He was also named MVP of the 2017 ECHL Kelly Cup Playoffs, posting eight goals and 16 assists in 20 postseason contests, helping lead the Eagles to a Kelly Cup Championship.

The Calgary, Alberta native notched new career highs during the 2016-17 campaign in goals (18), assists (46), points (64) and penalty minutes (59). His 64 points were the third-most by a defenseman in Colorado Eagles history.

“Matt’s body of work really speaks for itself,” said Eagles president and general manager Chris Stewart. “As we saw last season, Matt is one of the best defensemen in this league and he has the ability to take over a game and produce big goals at critical points in a contest.”

The 27 year-old has posted 144 points in 197 ECHL games, after beginning his professional career in the Central Hockey League with the Allen Americans, Arizona Sundogs and Tulsa Oilers. He was named the ECHL Defenseman of the Year during the 2013-14 season with the Ontario Reign and also earned a spot on the ECHL All-Star Team in both the 2013-14 and 2014-15 campaigns.

“It was really special getting to be a part of another cup-winning team last year,” said Register. “Colorado is such a nice place and the Eagles are a first-class organization to play for. It will be a great test this season as the defending champs to build off of what we accomplished last season and taking another step in the right direction.”

Register spent four seasons at the junior level with the Bonnyville Pontiacs of the AJHL, collecting 94 points in 166 games. He would also be named the AJHL Defenseman of the Year in 2010, after leading the league’s defensemen in scoring with 61 points in 58 games during the 2009-10 season. It would also land him a spot on the AJHL All-Star Team in 2010.
