WINDSOR, Colo. – The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, have announced that they have re-signed defenseman Jake Marto for the 2017-18 season. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound defenseman notched a career-high 56 points in 69 regular season games with Colorado during the 2016-17 campaign, finishing third in the league’s Defenseman of the Year voting and earning a spot on the All-ECHL Second Team. He would go on to generate five goals and 13 assists in 20 postseason games, helping the Eagles capture their first Kelly Cup Championship. The Grand Forks, North Dakota native has posted 124 points in 218 total contests with Colorado, playing at a combined +37 during that time.
“Jake is a proven, puck-moving defenseman who has now added a championship to his resume,” said Eagles head coach Aaron Schneekloth. “He has been a tremendous asset for us along the blue line for several years now and it was great to see him recognized last season as a member of the All-ECHL Team. His outstanding production continued throughout the playoffs and what also cannot be overshadowed is his amazing presence in the community each and every year.”
A two-time WCHA champion during his NCAA career at the University of North Dakota, Marto also enjoyed a two-year stint playing professionally in Europe. He collected 17 points in 51 games while playing for Sodertalje SK in Sweden during the 2013-14 campaign. The Grand Forks, North Dakota native generated 11 points in 49 games with the Graz 99ers in Austria in the 2014-15 campaign. In addition, Marto has also appeared in 14 AHL games with the St. John’s Ice Caps, posting three points.
“I was really happy to be able to sign back in Colorado for next season,” said Marto. “My wife and I love being here, the organization is first class in every way, the fans are incredible and playing at the BEC, especially in those playoff games last season, it just makes me excited to aim for another championship here next season.”
