Friday morning, September 8th, kicks off the Colorado Avalanche Rookie Camp with three Eagles players in the mix. For Julien Nantel and Shawn St. Amant this will be their second professional rookie camp, after both spent most of last season splitting time with the San Antonio Rampage and the Colorado Eagles.
Eagles announced earlier in the summer the signing of North Dakota’s Gage Ausmus, who joins St. Amant and Nantel at camp. “I’m really excited to be out here, looking forward to getting out on the ice some more. It’ll be nice to play some games this weekend against other teams and get back into the swing of things.”said Ausmus. He is coming off a four-year college career with North Dakota, this will be his first time attending a pro camp. “I don’t know if I can pick one thing that’s different from college to coming out here at camp. Everyone is a little more detailed and focused, nobody wants to go out and miss a pass or anything.”
Nantel and St. Amant were some of the more veteran players at camp this year, “The experience last year I was more of a rookie; this year I know how things work. I know the coach a little more and how he runs the teams here and what his systems are. There’s a good group of guys in here so it’ll be nice to meet some of the new guys and play some games.” Said Nantel about coming into his second year of rookie camp.
We also caught up with St. Amant about what he is looking forward to this weekend. “I’m excited to get back at it. I took two weeks off this summer before getting back in the gym, so it’s nice to be hitting the ice now.” St. Amant was with the Eagles for the entire Kelly Cup Championship run, he totaled 15 points throughout the playoffs. “We had a great season with the Eagles, winning the Kelly Cup, so that’s a great reason for ending your season in June.”
The Avalanche rookies travel to San Jose for the Sharks Prospect Showcase. They will play three games over the weekend against the Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes and San Jose Sharks rookie teams.
